3 Famous Spanish Surrealist Artists

An entrepreneurial businessman with extensive expertise in art, Joe Nuzzulo is founder and president of The Salvador Dali Society. Joe Nuzzolo also created and trademarked Bulletproof Authentication, a service that assesses and certifies the legitimacy of artwork.

Mr. Nuzzolo is an expert on the works of Salvador Dali, one of Spain’s most well-known surreal artists. Other famous surreal artists from Spain include Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Eduardo Chillida.

Known for surrealist paintings such as Girl Before a Mirror, Woman with Flower, and Laying Naked on a Red Cushion, Pablo Picasso created some of his most famous works by drawing inspiration from Marxist ideology and the work of Sigmund Freud. Each of Picasso’s surreal artworks features a fragmented, separated, and distorted woman.

Joan Miro began his career producing traditional artwork featuring still life and landscapes. His style dramatically changed after he moved to Paris and was exposed to the surrealist works of Andre Breton. His later artwork combined everyday items with abstract objects derived from his creative imagination.

After sustaining an injury as a football player, Eduardo Chillida originally pursued architecture and later entered the art world when he moved to Paris. Using clay and plaster and eventually iron and alabaster, Chillida created world-renowned sculptures and monuments. He thought of himself as a realist, although his works are perceived to be primarily abstract in nature.
